By 1795, the revolutionary government was weak, unstable, and deeply unpopular. Napoleon made his climb through four specific moves.

Move 1: Clearing the streets with artillery (1795). When a royalist mob marched on the government building in Paris, a young artillery officer named Napoleon Bonaparte ordered his men to fire cannons filled with metal balls directly into the crowd. This violent act saved the government. In return, politicians gave Napoleon command of France's armies.

Move 2: The military coup of 18 Brumaire (1799). Four years later, the government was collapsing under corruption and economic failure. Napoleon abandoned his army in Egypt, returned to Paris, and surrounded the legislature with soldiers. He forced lawmakers to dissolve the government and create a new three-man executive called the Consulate, naming himself First Consul.
